Bern

Bern also spelled Berne, is a city in western Switzerland and the capital of the Bern canton. It runs along the Aare River’s narrow loop. The presence of the ancient castle of Nydegg, which guarded a crossing over the Aare, most likely prompted Berthold V, duke of Zähringen, to establish Bern in 1191 as a military post on the border between the German-speaking Alemanni and the French-speaking.
